Galicia has the optimum characteristics for camellia cultivation. A humid climate, mild temperatures and fertile, acidic soils make the growth of these plants spectacular and surprise experts from all over the world.
Camellias arrived in Galicia at the end of the 18th century, coming from distant countries such as China and Japan. At first they were installed in the gardens of the pazos and stately homes of the Galician nobility, but with time they were introduced in the gardens and estates, both public and private, throughout our geography, until Galicia became an international reference in the cultivation and production of this plant. At present the community treasures almost 8,000 different varieties of camellia.
